Randi Penn Paper 1 Boyer AHM102 Online March 8, 2015 The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 is also referred to as ACA or Obamacare. ACA is a federal statute that was signed by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010. President Obama worked to make this law a success in order to ensure that Americans receive proper healthcare. The goal of the ACA is to promote quality healthcare and to amplify the accessibility to lower income Americans. The ACA does require most individuals to obtain health insurance only if they can afford it. But with the healthcare systems expenditures comprising 17.6% of the U.S. gross domestic product and with millions of Americans not having the accessibility of health care, resulting in poor health indicators, the current administration’s priority was to create mandated healthcare reform. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the act will enable an additional 32 million Americans or a total of 94% of Americans to have access to health insurance (Niles, 28). Over the course of the next few years, until approximately 2017, there will be about 50 healthcare reform initiatives implemented. The ACA consists of ten areas of reform. Each area comes with its own set of standards and regulations. The first title is â€Å"Affordability and Accessibility of Healthcare†.
